Almost every spec sheet for an màn hình LED ngoài trời opens with a brightness claim — and the numbers have been quietly inflating for a decade. The honest answer for a fixed billboard is 5,500–6,500 nits, not 10,000. Here is how to read the number, match it to your site orientation, and stop paying for brightness you will never switch on.

Các nội dung chính
  • 5,500–6,500 nits is the correct spec for a fixed billboard in direct sun. Below 4,000 nits washes out; above ~6,500 you hit diminishing returns in real visibility.
  • Brightness is a function of site orientation and latitude, not preference — a shaded north-facing facade needs far less than a south-facing Gulf rooftop.
  • Higher brightness means more heat and faster component ageing. Overspecifying shortens lifespan for no visible benefit.
  • Ask for brightness at maximum power with automatic brightness control (ABC), so the screen dims itself at night instead of wasting electricity and burning in panels.

01 — Where the Arms Race Started

Why Outdoor Brightness Claims Have Been Inflating for a Decade

Twenty years ago, a 3,000-nit outdoor panel was considered bright. Today you can find datasheets claiming 8,000, 10,000, even 12,000 nits. The LED chips did not suddenly get three times brighter — what changed is how the number is measured and marketed.

Peak vs Sustained

A “peak” figure is the momentary maximum at full white, often with overdriven LEDs, measured at 25°C on a lab bench. It is not what the panel sustains on a 45°C rooftop after six hours in the sun.

Đo góc

Brightness drops as viewing angle increases. Some manufacturers quote the on-axis figure, which overstates what a driver sees from a moving car at 30–40 degrees off-axis.

No Load Condition

Datasheet brightness is often measured with a test pattern, not real content. Real-world average content brightness runs well below the white-screen maximum.

When a datasheet gives you one brightness number with no conditions attached, treat it as a ceiling, not a promise. The only number that matters is the sustained brightness at the ambient temperature of your installation site.

02 — Orientation, Not Preference

Brightness Is a Function of Where the Screen Faces

The right brightness for an màn hình LED ngoài trời is determined by three site variables: how much direct sunlight hits the face, at what latitude, and whether the panel is exposed or shaded. A covered transit concourse and a south-facing Gulf rooftop are two different products.

Two outdoor LED screens comparing shaded canopy installation at 3500 nits versus direct sun billboard at 6500 nits
Môi trường Ánh sáng môi trường xung quanh Required Nits Matching Series
Semi-outdoor / canopy 500–2,000 lux 3,500–4,000 nits FO Series (P1.2–P2.5)
Shaded / north facade 2,000–10,000 lux 4,500–5,500 nits Hình vuông 960 P4/P5
Ánh nắng trực tiếp / bảng quảng cáo 20,000–100,000 lux 5,500–6,500 nits Hình vuông 960/1000 bước răng lớn
Bảng quảng cáo 3D nhìn bằng mắt thường Ánh nắng trực tiếp 6,000–6,500 nits Hình vuông 1000 P3.91–P6.25
Latitude Changes the Requirement

A screen at 25° latitude in Riyadh sits under far more direct solar irradiance than the same screen at 52° in London. Gulf and Middle East sites should be specified at the top of their brightness class and paired with a common cathode option to shed the extra heat. A temperate-climate north-facing screen rarely needs more than 5,000 nits.

03 — The Physics of Visibility

Direct Sun: Why 5,000 Nits Is the Floor, Not the Ceiling

Direct noon sunlight delivers roughly 100,000 lux onto a south-facing surface. For a screen to hold visible contrast against that backdrop, its brightness has to compete with the reflected ambient light — not just exceed it, but out-class it by enough margin that colours and text remain legible to a driver passing at speed.

The practical engineering rule: an màn hình LED ngoài trời in direct sun needs a minimum of 5,000 nits, and 6,000–6,500 nits is the recommended working range for billboards and DOOH. Below 4,000 nits the screen reads as washed out and grey in midday sun, no matter how good the pitch or contrast ratio on the datasheet.

This is why our Square 960 and Square 1000 series are engineered at 5,500–6,500 nits as standard — deliberately at the top of the practical range, without overdriving the LEDs into a short lifespan.

What “Readable” Actually Means

Visibility is not just brightness — it is brightness against ambient, sustained over time. A 6,500-nit panel that holds 6,500 nits for 12 straight hours in a Saudi summer is worth far more than a 10,000-nit peak that derates to 6,000 after an hour of heat soak. Ask your supplier for the brightness-vs-temperature curve, not just the headline number.

04 — When Bigger Isn’t Better

The 10,000-Nit Trap: Buying Headroom You’ll Never Use

Here is the part most suppliers will not tell you: for the overwhelming majority of outdoor sites, you do not need 10,000 nits. There is a physical point of diminishing returns around 6,500 nits where more brightness stops improving daylight legibility and only adds heat, power draw, and component stress.

When 5,500–6,500 Is Correct
  • Roadside and rooftop billboards in direct sun
  • DOOH networks across mixed city-centre sites
  • 3D naked-eye billboards with anamorphic content
  • Facades with south or west exposure
When Overspecifying Hurts You
  • You pay for LEDs you run at 60% duty forever
  • More heat accelerates capacitor and power-supply ageing
  • Higher power draw raises lifetime operating cost
  • Nighttime glare becomes a nuisance without proper ABC dimming

A supplier who pushes “more nits” as the answer to every brief is often hiding a weaker thermal design. The honest answer is a specific brightness for a specific site — and a clear reason why.

If you are comparing quotes, see how we break down what a per-square-metre outdoor LED price actually buys — brightness class is one of the seven variables that move the number.

05 — The Trade-Off No One Mentions

Brightness and Lifespan Are the Same Axis

Every watt of electrical power that does not become light becomes heat. Running an màn hình LED ngoài trời at maximum brightness in direct sun is the highest thermal load the panel will ever see — maximum LED current at maximum ambient temperature. This is exactly when the power supply and driver capacitors age fastest.

The relationship is well understood: component lifespan roughly halves for every 10°C of sustained temperature rise. That is why a well-designed panel manages heat as carefully as it manages brightness — and why the common cathode option matters in hot climates.

How We Design for Both

Square 960 and Square 1000 pair 5,500–6,500 nits with an optional common cathode drive, which supplies each colour with its own matched voltage. The result is roughly 30% lower power draw and a meaningfully lower cabinet operating temperature at the same brightness — the difference between a panel that runs hot for years and one that runs cool. Details in our common cathode deep-dive.

Automatic brightness control (ABC) is the second half of the lifespan equation. A light sensor adjusts the screen to the ambient level — full brightness at noon, dimmed at dusk and overnight. Most operators never touch it, but it is the single easiest way to cut night-time power draw and extend panel life. Make sure ABC is part of your spec.

06 — Before You Sign Off

Three Questions That Expose a Fake Brightness Claim

You do not need a photometer to separate an honest brightness spec from a marketing number. Send these three questions to any supplier and watch how they answer:

  1. What is the sustained brightness at 40°C ambient, after four hours of full-white? This is the real operating condition for a summer billboard. A supplier with confidence in their thermal design will send the curve. The rest will deflect.
  2. Does the screen include automatic brightness control, and what is the dimming range? If ABC is absent or the panel has no night-time dimming, you are paying to light an empty street at 3 a.m.
  3. What is the measured brightness at the viewing angle of my audience? A driver on a highway sees a billboard at 30–40° off-axis, not head-on. Ask for the off-axis figure for your actual sight line.
Send Your Site, Get a Spec

Give us your screen size, the direction it faces, and the city. An engineer replies same day with a brightness recommendation matched to your latitude and orientation — plus pixel pitch and a mounting reference, because brightness never exists in isolation from điểm ảnh sân.

For the full outdoor range — Square 960, Square 1000, and FO Series — see the outdoor LED display comparison.

FAQ

A fixed outdoor billboard in direct sun needs a minimum of 5,000 nits, with 6,000–6,500 nits the recommended working range. Below 4,000 nits the screen washes out in midday sun. Square 960 and Square 1000 are engineered at 5,500–6,500 nits as standard, which is the top of the practical range without overdriving the LEDs into a short lifespan.

For almost every outdoor site, no. There is a physical point of diminishing returns around 6,500 nits where more brightness stops improving daylight legibility and only adds heat, power draw and component stress. Most buyers are charged for brightness they never use. A well-designed 6,500-nit panel that holds its brightness through heat soak beats a 10,000-nit peak that derates after an hour.

A shaded facade or covered outdoor environment only needs 3,500–5,500 nits. Semi-outdoor canopy and transit-hub installations run at 3,500–4,000 nits, which is the FO Series range. Matching brightness to actual ambient light — instead of assuming full sun everywhere — is how you avoid paying for unused headroom and avoid a screen that glares at night.

Yes. Brightness is driven by orientation and latitude. A north-facing screen in a temperate climate rarely needs more than 5,000 nits, while a south-facing rooftop in Riyadh should sit at the top of its brightness class. Latitude changes solar irradiance dramatically, which is why a proper spec starts from the site's orientation and city, not from a catalogue.

Yes. Every watt that does not become light becomes heat, and component lifespan roughly halves for every 10°C of sustained temperature rise. Running at maximum brightness in direct sun is the highest thermal load the panel ever sees. Common cathode drive cuts roughly 30% of power draw and lowers cabinet temperature, and automatic brightness control dims the screen at night to extend life.

ABC uses a light sensor to adjust the screen to ambient conditions — full brightness at noon, dimmed at dusk and overnight. It is the single easiest way to cut night-time power draw, reduce glare complaints, and extend panel life. Most operators never touch it, but you should confirm ABC is included before you sign off on a spec.

Ask three questions: what is the sustained brightness at 40°C ambient after four hours of full-white; does the screen include automatic brightness control with night-time dimming; and what is the measured brightness at the off-axis angle of your actual audience. A supplier with confidence in their thermal design sends the brightness-vs-temperature curve. The rest deflect.
